What to Pack for Umrah
Travel Documents
Your passport (valid for at least six months beyond your travel date), printed copies of your visa or e-visa confirmation, flight itinerary, hotel reservations, and travel insurance documents if applicable. Keep digital copies stored separately from physical copies. A photocopy of your passport stored in a different bag is advisable.
Ihram Essentials
For men: two white Ihram cloths, an Ihram belt or safety pins, and open sandals. Consider packing a spare set. For women: comfortable, modest clothing suitable for worship, and a prayer garment. Pack these in your carry-on so they are accessible during travel.
Clothing
Pack light, breathable clothing appropriate for warm weather. Temperatures in Makkah and Madinah can be quite high, but indoor spaces including the Haram are air-conditioned, so a light layer or shawl can be useful. Comfortable walking shoes are essential — you will walk significantly more than usual. Bring broken-in shoes, not new ones.
Personal Care
Unscented soap, shampoo, and deodorant for use during Ihram. Regular toiletries for after Ihram is completed. Sunscreen, lip balm, a small towel or washcloth, and any prescription medications with clear labeling. Pack medications in their original containers with prescriptions if possible.
Health and Comfort
A basic first aid kit including band-aids (for blisters), pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication, throat lozenges, and any personal medications. A reusable water bottle — staying hydrated is critical. Electrolyte packets are useful, especially during warmer months. Comfortable insoles for your shoes can make a significant difference.
Prayer and Worship
A small Quran or prayer book. A compact prayer rug if desired, though prayer areas are well-equipped. A small supplication book or printed du’a cards. A counter (tasbih) or use a phone app for counting.
Practical Items
A waist bag or crossbody bag to keep your phone, ID, and money secure during Tawaf and Sa’i. A portable phone charger — you will use your phone more than usual for navigation and communication. A universal power adapter (Saudi Arabia uses Type G outlets). A small, packable daypack for excursions.
Money and Communication
A small amount of Saudi Riyals for initial expenses. An ATM card that works internationally. A working phone with a data plan or an international SIM card — communication with your travel group and family at home is important.
What Not to Pack
Avoid overpacking. You will have access to shops near the Haram for most forgotten items. Avoid large luggage that is difficult to move through airports and hotel lobbies. Leave valuables and expensive jewelry at home.
Packing Tips
Roll clothes to save space and reduce wrinkles. Use packing cubes to organize. Pack a change of clothes and essential toiletries in your carry-on in case checked luggage is delayed. Label all bags clearly with your name and phone number.
