The City of Peace
Madinah — formally known as Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah (The Radiant City) — is the second holiest city in Islam. It is home to Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet’s Mosque) and the burial place of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Many pilgrims describe their time in Madinah as the most peaceful and serene part of their journey.
Masjid an-Nabawi
The Prophet’s Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world and is open 24 hours. The original mosque, built by the Prophet himself, is at the heart of the current structure. The mosque features the distinctive Green Dome, beneath which is the burial chamber of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Abu Bakr, and Umar (may God be pleased with them). The mosque includes retractable umbrellas in the courtyard that provide shade during the day.
Visiting Rawdah ash-Sharifah
The Rawdah — the area between the Prophet’s pulpit and his burial chamber — is considered one of the most blessed places on earth. Praying in the Rawdah is highly desired but access is managed due to the high number of visitors. Designated visiting times are allocated, often through a reservation system. Check current procedures with your group leader upon arrival.
Getting Around Madinah
Madinah is generally easier to navigate than Makkah. Many hotels are within walking distance of Masjid an-Nabawi. The surrounding streets are well-organized with clear signage. Taxis and ride-sharing apps are available for longer distances.
Weather
Madinah has a hot desert climate similar to Makkah, though it tends to be slightly cooler. Winter evenings can be quite cool by Saudi Arabian standards. Light layers are useful, especially for evening prayers and early mornings.
Ziyarat in Madinah
Common Ziyarat visits in Madinah include Masjid Quba (the first mosque built in Islam), Masjid al-Qiblatayn (the mosque of the two Qiblas), the Uhud battlefield and the martyrs’ cemetery, Jannat al-Baqi (the historic cemetery), and the date farms and markets. These visits are typically organized as group excursions by your travel coordinator.
Dates and Shopping
Madinah is famous for its dates (particularly Ajwa dates). The date market near the mosque is a popular destination for purchasing dates and other gifts. The surrounding commercial area includes modern shopping centers, traditional markets, and numerous restaurants.
Tips for Your Stay
The atmosphere in Madinah is noticeably calmer than Makkah. Take advantage of this for additional prayer, Quran reading, and reflection. Visit the mosque at different times of day to experience the changing atmosphere. The courtyard is particularly beautiful at night when the umbrellas are closed and the lighting is soft. Wear comfortable shoes for Ziyarat excursions as some sites involve walking on uneven terrain.
