Masjid al-Haram
The Sacred Mosque is the largest mosque in the world and is open 24 hours a day. It surrounds the Kaaba, and it is here that Tawaf and Sa’i are performed. The mosque has multiple levels, extensive air conditioning, and can accommodate millions of worshippers during peak periods. Familiarize yourself with the layout, gates, and your nearest entrance from your hotel.
Getting Around Makkah
If your hotel is close to the Haram, most of your travel will be on foot. For longer distances, ride-sharing apps work in Makkah, and taxis are available. During Hajj season, certain areas around the Haram have restricted vehicle access. The immediate area around the mosque is pedestrian-focused with walkways and tunnels connecting to nearby hotels and shopping areas.
Weather and Climate
Makkah has a hot desert climate. Summer temperatures can exceed 45°C (113°F), while winter months (November through February) are milder with temperatures around 20–30°C (68–86°F). Regardless of the season, the interior of the Haram is climate-controlled. Stay hydrated, especially if performing outdoor activities during warmer months.
Shopping and Essentials
The areas surrounding the Haram include shopping centers, pharmacies, and convenience stores. You can purchase most essentials locally, including Ihram garments, prayer items, and gifts. The Abraj Al-Bait complex near the Haram has multiple levels of shops and restaurants.
Dining
Hotels in Makkah range from those offering full meal plans to room-only arrangements. Many restaurants and food courts are within walking distance of the Haram, offering a variety of cuisines. During Ramadan, iftar meals are often served within the Haram complex.
Ziyarat in Makkah
Ziyarat visits in and around Makkah may include Jabal al-Nour (the mountain where the Cave of Hira is located), Jabal Thawr, Masjid al-Jinn, Jannat al-Mualla (the historic cemetery), and the Makkah Museum. These visits are typically organized as part of your travel group’s itinerary. Some sites involve significant walking or climbing.
Tips for Your Stay
Learn your hotel’s location relative to the Haram gates — the complex is vast and it is easy to become disoriented. Save your hotel’s location on your phone map. The best times for Tawaf with fewer crowds are generally between midnight and Fajr, or mid-morning on weekdays. Keep valuables secure and carry only what you need when visiting the Haram.
