The Fifth Pillar of Islam

Hajj

Understanding the journey of a lifetime — preparation, process, and planning.

About Hajj

Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah, required once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able to undertake it. It takes place during the month of Dhul Hijjah in the Islamic calendar and involves a series of rituals performed over several days in and around Makkah.

Millions of Muslims from around the world gather each year for Hajj, making it one of the largest annual gatherings of people anywhere on earth. The experience is deeply spiritual and transformative for many pilgrims.

How Hajj Works for U.S. Pilgrims

Hajj access for international pilgrims is managed through a regulated system coordinated by the Saudi government. The number of spots available for each country is limited, and arrangements must be made through authorized channels.

The process typically involves registration, documentation, and coordination of travel logistics including flights, accommodation in Makkah, Madinah, Mina, and Arafat, as well as transportation between the Hajj sites. Requirements and procedures may change from year to year.

Preparing for Hajj

Spiritual Preparation

Begin learning the Hajj rituals, their sequence, and their significance well in advance. Many scholars recommend studying with a qualified teacher or attending a Hajj preparation course.

Physical Preparation

Hajj involves considerable walking, standing, and exposure to heat. Building physical stamina in the months before travel is strongly recommended, especially for older pilgrims.

Documentation

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Check current visa and health requirements. Keep copies of all documents.

Financial Planning

Plan for the total cost including the Hajj package, personal expenses, gifts, meals beyond what is included, and travel insurance. Budget a contingency amount for unexpected needs.
