Understanding Ihram

What is Ihram?

Ihram refers to the sacred state a Muslim enters before performing Umrah or Hajj. The word describes both the spiritual state of consecration and the specific garments worn during this time. Entering Ihram involves making a clear intention (niyyah) to perform the pilgrimage and observing certain restrictions until the rites are completed.

When and Where to Enter Ihram

Pilgrims must enter the state of Ihram before crossing the designated boundary point known as the Miqat. There are several Miqat locations depending on your direction of travel to Makkah. If you are flying, the airline will typically announce when the plane approaches the Miqat. Many pilgrims choose to enter Ihram before boarding their flight to avoid the difficulty of changing clothes during the journey.

Ihram Garments for Men

Men wear two pieces of white, unstitched cloth. The lower garment (Izar) wraps around the waist and extends to the lower legs. The upper garment (Rida) drapes over the shoulders, with the right shoulder uncovered during Tawaf (a practice called Idtiba). No underwear, socks, or head coverings are worn. Footwear should be open sandals that do not cover the ankles.

Ihram for Women

Women do not have a specific Ihram garment. They wear regular modest clothing that covers the body, with the face and hands uncovered. White is not required. Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing in layers is practical, as temperatures inside the Haram can vary. Comfortable closed or open shoes are both acceptable.

Preparing to Enter Ihram

Before putting on the Ihram garments and making the intention, it is recommended to perform ghusl (a full body wash) or at minimum wudu (ablution). Trim your nails, groom as needed, and apply any fragrance or perfume before entering Ihram, as these are not permitted afterward. Many travelers prepare at their hotel or the airport before departure.

Restrictions During Ihram

While in the state of Ihram, the following are not permitted: applying perfume or scented products, cutting hair or nails, covering the head (for men), wearing stitched clothing (for men), engaging in marital relations, hunting, and arguing or fighting. These restrictions are lifted once the Umrah is completed with the Halq or Taqsir.

The Talbiyah

Upon entering Ihram, pilgrims recite the Talbiyah — a declaration of response to God’s call. This is recited frequently throughout the pilgrimage. The Talbiyah begins: “Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk…” (Here I am, O God, here I am…). Learning this supplication before your journey is highly recommended.

Practical Tips

Pack your Ihram garments in your carry-on bag for easy access. Practice wrapping the garments before your trip. Bring safety pins or an Ihram belt to secure the lower garment. Carry unscented soap, deodorant, and toiletries for use during Ihram. If you are unsure about any aspect of Ihram, consult with your group leader or a knowledgeable guide.
