Travel Preparation
Before You Book
Before committing to a journey, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned travel dates. Check current visa requirements for your nationality. Discuss the trip with your physician, especially regarding any required or recommended vaccinations. Consider travel insurance, particularly coverage for medical emergencies and trip cancellation.
Choosing Your Journey
Consider your priorities: budget, hotel proximity to the Haram, travel dates, group size, and preferred travel style. Compare the Value, Comfort, and Signature tiers to find the right balance for your family. If traveling with children or seniors, proximity and comfort may be more important than cost savings.
Financial Preparation
Budget beyond the package price for personal expenses, meals not included in your package, shopping, local transportation, tips, and emergency funds. Notify your bank that you will be traveling to Saudi Arabia. Have at least one backup payment method. The Saudi Riyal is the local currency; ATMs and currency exchange are widely available in Makkah and Madinah.
Physical Preparation
Umrah involves significant physical activity, particularly walking. In the weeks before travel, build your stamina with daily walks. Wear the shoes you plan to use during the trip to break them in. Practice wearing Ihram garments (for men) to become comfortable with the wrap. If you have mobility limitations, discuss wheelchair arrangements with your travel coordinator in advance.
Spiritual Preparation
Familiarize yourself with the rituals of Umrah or Hajj. Learn the Talbiyah and key supplications. Read about the significance of the holy sites you will visit. Many pilgrims find that preparing spiritually in the weeks before travel enhances the depth and meaning of the entire experience.
Packing
Refer to our What to Pack guide for a detailed list. Key items: passport and travel documents, Ihram garments (in carry-on), comfortable walking shoes, modest clothing, prescription medications, unscented toiletries, a reusable water bottle, a portable phone charger, and a money belt or secure bag for valuables.
Communication Plan
Ensure your phone will work in Saudi Arabia — check with your carrier about international roaming or purchase a local SIM card upon arrival. Share your itinerary with family members staying home. Save important phone numbers (hotel, group leader, embassy) in your phone and on paper.
Day Before Departure
Confirm your flight details and departure time. Double-check that you have all documents. Charge all devices. Make arrangements for your home (mail, pets, bills). Get adequate rest — you will need your energy for the journey ahead. If entering Ihram before your flight, perform ghusl, put on Ihram garments, and make your intention before reaching the Miqat.
At the Airport
Arrive early. International flights to Saudi Arabia during peak seasons may have longer check-in lines. Have your passport, visa, and itinerary easily accessible. If you are already in Ihram, wear your sandals and have your regular shoes packed. Bring a light layer for the flight as cabins can be cool.
