Women’s Umrah Guide
Umrah for Women
Women perform the same essential rites of Umrah as men — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and hair trimming — with some differences in practice. This guide covers the specific considerations and practical advice for women preparing for Umrah.
Ihram for Women
Unlike men, women do not have a specific Ihram garment. You may wear any modest clothing that covers the body, with the face and hands uncovered. White is not required. Choose comfortable, loose-fitting clothing in breathable fabrics. Layers are practical as temperatures inside the Haram can differ from outside. A prayer garment (abaya and hijab) should be packed.
Menstruation During Umrah
If menstruation begins before completing Umrah, a woman may enter the Haram but should not perform Tawaf until she is ritually pure. Sa’i, according to many scholars, can be performed during menstruation if Tawaf has already been completed. If menstruation occurs during the trip, the itinerary can usually be adjusted. Consult with a knowledgeable religious guide regarding your specific situation and school of thought.
Hair Trimming (Taqsir)
For women, the final step of Umrah involves trimming a small amount of hair — approximately the length of a fingertip from the ends. This can be done privately at the hotel. Women do not shave their heads. Bring a small pair of scissors in your checked luggage for this purpose.
Practical Considerations at the Haram
Women have designated prayer areas within the Haram, though the main prayer halls and Tawaf area are shared. During crowded times, having a companion is helpful. Keep your personal belongings secure in a crossbody bag during Tawaf and Sa’i. Comfortable shoes that are easy to remove and carry are important, as you will take them off at Haram entrances.
Safety and Comfort
Travel in groups or pairs when possible, especially at night. Keep your phone charged and carry your hotel card with the address written in Arabic. The Haram and surrounding areas are generally very safe, but being in crowded spaces requires awareness. If you feel unwell or overwhelmed, rest areas and medical stations are available within the mosque complex.
What to Pack
In addition to the general packing list: prayer garments, a lightweight prayer rug, hijab pins, unscented hygiene products for Ihram, modest swimwear if your hotel has a women’s pool or spa, comfortable walking shoes that are easy to slip on and off, and personal medications. Travel-size packets of tissues and wet wipes are very useful.
Traveling With Family
Many women travel for Umrah with their families. While a mahram (male guardian) requirement may apply depending on current regulations and your circumstances, policies have evolved in recent years. Verify the current requirements with your travel organizer and the Saudi embassy or e-visa portal.
